Tensegrity Practice Series

An Introduction to Tensegrity

Click the title above to download a booklet from Cleargreen explaining what Tensegrity is and who the Practice Groups are for. If you have additional questions please call or email us on the Contact details below.

Concord Institute run a Tensegrity Practice Group every Monday evening in our Bodywork studio. Practice starts at 7pm and finishes at 9pm. All are welcome, especially newcomers - you do not need to have practiced Tensegrity before.

Our intent for the series is to really get to grips with the passes, working to learn the movements in a way that the body remembers, taking the mind out of the way and creating room for energetic perception.

For those wishing to join this series or if you want to drop in for an evening please call the centre in advance to let us know you are coming.

Please wear clean, indoor training shoes.

What Is Tensegrity? (source Cleargreen website)
Tensegrity is the name given to the modern version of the magical passes: positions and movements of body and breath that were dreamt and stalked by men and women seers who lived in Mexico in ancient times, and taught to Carlos Castaneda, Florinda Donner-Grau, Taisha Abelar and Carol Tiggs by their teacher, don Juan Matus, a Yaqui Indian from Yuma, Arizona, and Sonora, Mexico, and the heir to a lineage of seers that originates in Mexico of ancient times.

The word Tensegrity is borrowed from an architect, engineer, scientist and dreamer whom Carlos Castaneda admired: R. Buckminster Fuller, who described tensegrity as a combination of tensional integrity, the forces at work in a structure that is formed by a finite network of compression, or rigid elements interconnected through tensile, or elastic elements which give the structure its overall integrity. Due to this elastic property of interconnections, when one element of the tensegrity structure is shifted, this shift is spread throughout the whole structure, and all the other elements shift as well, or adapt for a new configuration, yielding to these shifts without breaking.

Don Juan Matus, a Yaqui Indian Seer from Mexico, taught Carlos Casteneda a wealth of movements that promote health, vigour, physical well-being, and more importantly, freedom of perception. He called these movements Magical Passes and explained that the men and women seers who lived in Mexico in ancient times discovered them through their dreaming practices.

“As you chase away your internal dialogue, other items of awareness begin to fill in the empty space, so to speak. The new flux of energy which the magical passes bring to your centers of vitality makes your assemblage point more fluid. It’s no longer rigidly placed. You’re no longer driven by our ancestral fears, which make us incapable of taking a step in any direction. Sorcerors say that energy makes us free, and that is the absolute truth,”

Carlos Castaneda.
